Puppy Vaccination Programme In Swindon

Why Are Puppy Vaccinations Important?

Puppy vaccinations are essential for protecting your pup from harmful diseases. These include distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis, and leptospirosis. These conditions can spread quickly and may cause permanent health damage and even death.

Vaccines work by training your puppy’s immune system to recognise and fight these harmful diseases before they have a chance to cause serious harm. By sticking to a recommended schedule, you can give your pet the best possble start in life, ensuring they are protected from their earliest weeks right through to adulthood.

How Many Vaccinations Do Puppies Need?

Your puppy will usually require two or three vaccinations in their first few months: two vaccines as part of a standard schedule, and two optional vaccinations (parvovirus-only boosters and Kennel Cough). Plus another optional jab if your dog is travelling abroad (rabies shot).

When Do Puppies Need Their First Vaccination?

The ideal first vaccination for a puppy is given around 7 to 8 weeks of age. At this time your puppy will be given a free health check here at Eastcott Vets.

When Do Puppies Get Their Second Vaccinations?

The first vaccines are followed by a second 3–4 weeks later (the puppy will need to be over 11 weeks of age when this is given).

How long after the first vaccination can the puppy go out?

Puppies can only be allowed outside 10-14 days after their second jab. It is only at this time when puppies can safely go out into public spaces, making early vaccinationcrucial to get them protected.

Optional Vaccines

At 16-20 weeks we strongly advise an additional Parvo vaccination. Parvovirus has been an issue in the Swindon area over recent years, and this third vaccination is recommended. Parvovirus is a particularly virulent virus and is often fatal.

Puppy booster vaccinations are given annually, a year from the date of the second vaccine. This is a single injection. Your dog will receive a full health examination when they visit for their annual boosters.

Kennel Cough vaccination can be given from 6 weeks of age. Dogs do not have to have been in kennels to catch Kennel Cough, which is a disease that unsurprisingly, causes severe respiratory signs, especially a harsh cough. This vaccine is ‘dropped’ down the dog’s nose. Although this disease is very rarely life-threatening, we would suggest that all dogs receive it.

Rabies vaccinations are given to dogs that are travelling outside the UK for holidays. Please ask a member of staff for details or visit the government website.

Puppy Booster Vaccinations

Once your dog’s initial course is complete, they’ll need annual booster vaccines to maintain their protection. These are tailored to your pet’s health, age, and lifestyle, and include:

  • Leptospirosis and Kennel Cough annually.

  • Distemper, Parvovirus, and Hepatitis every three years.

  • A comprehensive health check at each visit.

  • Update of vaccination records for travel or insurance purposes.

By keeping up with annual boosters, you’ll ensure your pet stays protected against preventable illnesses for life. If you're looking for a cost-effective way to keep on top of your pet's booster shot schedule, consider our Pet Health For Life Plans.
