What Are Rabbit Vaccinations?

Rabbits are vulnerable to infectious diseases and illnesses but fortunately, your bunny can be safeguarded against diseases with annual rabbit vaccinations. To be fully protected, this would include Myxomatosis and both strains of hemorrhagic disease (RDH1 and RDH2).

Myxomatosis: This is a viral disease that is often fatal in rabbits and is transmitted by insects such as fleas and mosquitos.

Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease: There are two types of Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease, RHD1 and RHD2, both can be deadly to rabbits. RHD is usually spread through direct contact with infected rabbits or contaminated objects.

The combination of these two vaccines should provide your bunny with the best possible protection as both these diseases can be potentially fatal.  Previously administered through two separate injections, Eastcott Vets now offers a new rabbit vaccine meaning your rabbit will be protected from both diseases with just a single injection.

Although Rabbit vaccinations are simple and quick, they also provide an opportunity to give your rabbit a health check. Annual visits for rabbit vaccinations allow our veterinary experts to give your bunny an overall assessment, detect any potential health issues, and discuss any concerns you might have about your pet.

When Should I Get My Rabbit Vaccinated?

Rabbit vaccinations can take place from when your bunny is between five and seven weeks old and immunity takes three weeks to develop. Your bunny will then need to have a yearly booster vaccination to ensure they maintain the best possible prevention against these diseases. If you are unsure about the date of your bunny’s last rabbit vaccinations, it’s important to contact Eastcott vets as a priority and speak to our experts to discuss your pet’s vaccination plan.

Until your rabbit is fully vaccinated, you may want to consider precautions like keeping them indoors and staying on top of their cleanliness to minimise the risk of picking up these diseases.
