EMS

At Eastcott Vets we are committed to supporting veterinary students through EMS placements. We have opportunities for students to grow and develop outside of the university environment by spending time alongside our Primary Care Clinicians, working on genuine clinical cases.

We offer placements throughout the year. Initial placements are a minimum of 2 weeks, whilst returning students can attend for shorter placements.

Accommodation is limited, please enquire.

The placement will consist of:

  • Four 10 hour working days with one day off in the week
  • Shadowing one vet for the entire working day
  • Becoming involved in all clinical aspects (patient dependent) including but not limited to
    • Surgery (One routine surgical procedure minimum)
    • Consults
    • IV placement
    • Phlebotomy

Unfortunately we are unable to guarantee any clinical activity involvement but endeavour to teach as much as possible.  On occasion patient safety may require less teaching and more shadowing but we do our best to minimise these times.

If we are able to offer a placement during one of your chosen dates additional documents will be required to enable us to enhance and tailor your EMS experience and help track progress. These documents will be sent across to you via email.

Work Experience

As we are a busy hospital site and with health and safety procedures being paramount, we unfortunately can only accept applications from students who are over 16 years of age.

We have arrangements in place with both Wiltshire College at Lackham, and New College Swindon. If you are studying Animal Care at either of these colleges, please contact your tutor or placement officer so that they can liaise with us directly on your behalf.

If you are an AS Level or A Level Student at a different college, applying for Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Sciences or Veterinary Nursing then please send an email to: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. outlining your current studies and your work experience wishes (marking your email for the attention of: Jamie Dunn & Zoe Gale).

Please also be aware that in order to welcome more students, we have an established week-long programme in place, and therefore cannot accommodate longer placements.

Finally, all placements will be at our main hospital site in Edison Park, Dorcan, Swindon.

Volunteers

Sadly we are unable to accept volunteer helpers because of the high levels of supervision that would be required. If you are interested in a volunteer job with animals in Swindon you could try looking for Swindon based animal charities or rescue homes.
