The post mortem results on Pippa the spaniel that sadly died before Christmas have confirmed that she did have Alabama Rot. Paul Higgs MA VetMB CertSAM DipECVIM-CA MRCVS, European Veterinary Specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine - Eastcott's Head of Internal Medicine has written an information sheet on Alabama Rot that should answer any questions that you may have. Our feline patients now have the luxury of listening to calming classical music when they stay with us. Research shows that cats relax (as determined by their lower respiratory rate and pupil diameter) under the influence of classical music. Whilst their nurses may prefer it pop music does not have quite the same effect and heavy metal music has a tendency to make things all a bit too stressful! A cat without stress makes a much happier patient that can mean that lower doses of anaesthetic can be used. Not only do we have music on tap but we also have special ‘cat forts’ and curtains available for those cats that like their privacy. Only 5 star treatment is good enough for our patients.
Two Thirds of Vets Injured By Pets in the Last Year
Not all of our patients are happy to visit us and many beautifully behaved pets can behave very differently when they visit the
surgery. Vets responding to a recent survey described some of the injuries they had received and experiences in the consulting room:

What is the Big Tick Project?
You may have seen TV presenter and naturalist Chris Packham talking about the University of Bristol’s Big Tick Project this summer on BBC News. They are investigating rising tick numbers and the risk to our dogs and ourselves from tick-borne diseases such as Lyme Disease. If you find a tick on your pet, we would love it! We will be collecting any ticks found on dogs coming in to the Eastcott Vets Swindon surgeries and sending any ticks found to the University of Bristol for analysis. Anyone whose dog takes part in this ground-breaking research will receive a Big Tick Project certificate and help progress veterinary and human medicine.
Mission Rabies
Our Malawi project manager, Dagmar, met this family and their dog in Blantyre last week - 2 of the dog’s puppies were showing signs of rabies and had already bitten three local children. Dagmar put the two puppies to sleep and arranged for rabies diagnostic testing at the local lab - they came back positive. The children are now receiving vital post-exposure vaccines, but it shows the need for our programme in May - vaccinating over 30,000 dogs in Blantyre city in just one month in partnership with SPCA Blantyre to launch a 3 year programme to make rabies history
